Arzilla's Birthday Party!!!

Arzilla Benton turned 100 years old on August 13, 2005.  On Sunday the 14th, we held a party for Arzilla at St. John's.  Arzilla has lived in Globe most of her adult life.  She moved here with her husband and much to the benefit of Globe and our church, she decided to make Globe her permanent home.

Happy Birthday Arzilla!!

Many of Arzilla's family members came to help us celebrate her 100th birthday at St. John's.  The mayor of Globe (Stan Gibson), as well as  councilman Ernie Lopez, came to celebrate as well.  And the mayor read a proclamation declaring "Arzilla Benton Day".  The proclomation included references to Arzilla's life including that she has lived through two world wars, several smaller wars, the Great Depression, and the invention of television as well as the internet.  The town of Globe also presented Arzilla with 2 dozen gorgeous long-stemmed roses.

100 years ago, the average life expectancy in the US was 47 years!  The average wage was 22 cents an hour.  95% of all births happened at home.  Want to read more about what life was like in 1905?  click here for some statistics about the US 100 years ago.

Arzilla hugs two of her great-neices.

Arzilla listens as mayor Stan Gibson reads the proclamation.

Bob and Charm McCusick take a photo with Arzilla.  In the background is a tile mosaic of Simon of Cyrene.  Simon carried the cross for Jesus when he was no longer able to do so.  Bob and Charm made the tile mosaic many years ago and during the birthday party, Bob shared with the crowd that the red robe that Simon is wearing was done in honor of a favorite red shawl that Arzilla used to wear.

St. John's is blessed to have such a wonderful church member as Arzilla and we were glad to see so many of her family travel from places like Chicago and L.A. to come celebrate her 100th birthday with us!
